The Compagnie Nama’s voyage to Cape Town

In November 2024, the Compagnie Nama from Bamako, Mali, took part in the International Conference on Contemporary Puppetry Training and the associated festival at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa, which were held as part of the UNIMA International Meeting. These events brought together artists, trainers and researchers from around the world to discuss contemporary practices in puppet theatre, an art form at the crossroads of theatre and the visual arts.
The objectives of this participation were multiple. On the one hand, Yacouba Magassouba, Sekou Dembele, Sekou Coumare, Salif Berthe, Ramata Kone and Aoua Camara wanted to discover new trends and innovations in contemporary puppet theatre training and practice. On the other hand, they also wanted to share their artistic and pedagogical skills developed in Mali in this field with interested professionals.
They also took advantage of their participation to forge new contacts with other artists and institutions. And finally, they were able to raise the profile of the company’s work by having the opportunity to present one of their plays during the festival, namely « Chat pèlerin », which focuses mainly on the theme of tolerance and social cohesion.
La Compagnie Nama de Bamako, au Mali, a participé en novembre 2024 à la Conférence internationale sur la formation en arts contemporains de la marionnette et au festival associé à la University of the Western Cape en Afrique du Sud, qui se sont déroulés dans le cadre de la Rencontre internationale de l’UNIMA. Ces événements ont réuni des artistes, des formateurs et des chercheuses du monde entier afin d’échanger sur les pratiques contemporaines du théâtre de marionnettes, une forme d’art à la croisée du théâtre et des arts plastiques.
Les objectifs de cette participation étaient multiples. D’une part, Yacouba Magassouba, Sekou Dembele, Sekou Coumare, Salif berthe, Ramata Kone et Aoua Camara souhaitaient découvrir les nouvelles tendances et innovations dans la formation et la pratique du théâtre de marionnettes contemporain. D’autre part, ils souhaitaient également partager leurs compétences artistiques et pédagogiques développées au Mali dans ce domaine avec des professionnels intéressés.
Ils ont également profité de leur participation pour nouer de nouveaux contacts avec d’autres artistes et institutions. Enfin, ils ont pu accroître la visibilité du travail de la compagnie en ayant l’occasion de présenter l’une de leurs pièces de théâtre pendant le festival, à savoir « Chat pèlerin », qui traite principalement du thème de la tolérance et de la cohésion sociale.
