4th CODESRIA – CASB Summer School in African Studies (online edition)

In 2021, the Fondation Oumou Dilly once again provided funding for the Summer School in African Studies and Areas Studies in Africa. As in previous years, it was organised with great commitment by the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) in close cooperation with the Centre for African Studies Basel (CASB). The fourth edition was supposed to have taken place in Dakar in 2020, but was postponed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and had to be held digitally then as well. This time 80 laureates were selected to participate in the programme: „The Normative Order in African Studies„. The faculty consisted of Elísio S. Macamo, Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni and Ralph Weber.
En 2021, la Fondation Oumou Dilly a de nouveau financé l’Université d’été en études africaines et études régionales en Afrique. Comme les années précédentes, elle a été organisée avec un grand engagement par le Conseil pour le développement de la recherche en sciences sociales en Afrique (CODESRIA) en étroite coopération avec le Centre d’études africaines de Bâle (CASB). La quatrième édition aurait dû avoir lieu à Dakar en 2020, mais elle a été reportée d’un an en raison de la pandémie de Covid-19 et a dû être organisée numériquement à ce moment-là également. Cette fois, 80 lauréats ont été sélectionnés pour participer au programme : „L’ordre normatif dans les études africaines“. Le corps enseignant était composé de Elísio S. Macamo, Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni et Ralph Weber.
The Fondation Oumou Dilly once again supported the International Art Festival (IAF), which took place in Basel from 18.9-03.10.2022. The interdisciplinary festival for contemporary art is dedicated to the African continent and its widespread diaspora. In addition to the annual photo exhibition of the Cap Prize winners, this year’s edition also hosted the art project „Staging Times“.
As always, all artistic interventions took place in public space. Their aim was to invite the Basel public once again to engage with a differentiated range of images of a multi-layered continent and its diaspora.

La Fondation Oumou Dilly a une nouvelle fois soutenu le Festival Internationale d’Art (IAF), qui s’est déroulé à Bâle du 18.9-03.10.2022. Ce festival interdisciplinaire d’art contemporain est dédié au continent africain et à sa vaste diaspora. Outre exposition photo annuelle des lauréats du prix Cap, l’édition de cette année a également accueilli le projet artistique „Staging Times“ .
Comme toujours, toutes les interventions artistiques ont eu lieu dans l’espace public. Leur objectif était d’inviter une fois de plus le public bâlois à s’engager dans une gamme différenciée d’images d’un continent aux multiples facettes et de sa diaspora.
Project “Staging Times” at BHROX bauhause reuse in Berlin

From 12 August to 2 September 2021, the art project „Staging Times“ initiated by the Fondation Oumou Dilly was hosted by the transdisciplinary centre and participatory urban laboratory BHROX bauhaus reuse on Ernst-Reuter-Platz in Berlin.
As part of the „Staging Times“ project, the photographers Lebohang Kganye (South Africa), Sarah Waiswa (Uganda) and Aboubacar Traore (Mali) and the three theatre-makers Thokozani Kapiri (Malawi), Freddy Sabimbona (Burundi) and Noël Minoungou (Burkina Faso) explored the topic of „time“ in three groups of two between 2018 and 2020.
The design of the project followed a ping-pong format: first, the photographers created a series of photos which they sent to their respective project partners from the theatre. They took the pictures as a starting point for developing their plays. In a second step, the theatre performances in turn inspired the photographers for another photo series. This back-and-forth process produced six photo series and three theatre productions. In the staged visual worlds, which inspired each other associatively, crises of the present intertwine with apocalyptic futures and traumatic pasts to create a multi-layered reflection on being in the world from different African perspectives.
The exhibition in Berlin showed a selection of images, videos and sound installations from the three sub-projects for the first time in Europe. In the course of the exhibition, BHROX repeatedly became a stage and podium for musicians (Midi Kwa’Kwa), performers (Jumoke Adeyanju, Thomias Radin and Jack Mensah) from the African diaspora living in Berlin, who in turn entered into a dialogue with the „Staging Times“ project with their own performances.

Du 12 août au 2 septembre 2021, le projet artistique „Staging Times“ initié par la Fondation Oumou Dilly a été accueilli par le centre transdisciplinaire et laboratoire urbain participatif BHROX bauhaus reuse sur Ernst-Reuter-Platz à Berlin.
Dans le cadre du projet „Staging Times“, les photographes Lebohang Kganye (Afrique du Sud), Sarah Waiswa (Ouganda) et Aboubacar Traore (Mali) et les trois metteurs en scène Thokozani Kapiri (Malawi), Freddy Sabimbona (Burundi) et Noël Minoungou (Burkina Faso) ont exploré le thème du „temps“ en trois groupes de deux entre 2018 et 2020.
La conception du projet a suivi un format ping-pong : les photographes ont d’abord créé une série de photos qu’ils ont envoyées à leurs partenaires de projet respectifs du théâtre. Ces derniers ont pris les photos comme point de départ pour développer leurs pièces. Dans un deuxième temps, les productions théâtrales ont à leur tour inspiré les photographes pour une autre série d’images. Ce processus de va-et-vient a produit six séries de photos et trois pièces théâtrales. Dans les univers visuels mis en scène, qui se sont inspirés les uns des autres de manière associative, les crises du présent s’entremêlent avec des futurs apocalyptiques et des passés traumatisants pour créer une réflexion à plusieurs dimensions sur l’existence dans le monde à partir de différentes perspectives africaines.
L’exposition à Berlin a montré une sélection d’images, de vidéos et d’installations sonores issues des trois sous-projets pour la première fois en Europe. Au cours de l’exposition, BHROX est devenu à plusieurs reprises une scène et un podium pour les musiciens (Midi Kwa’Kwa)et les performeurs (Jumoke Adeyanju, Thomias Radin, Jack Mensah) de la diaspora africaine vivant à Berlin, qui ont à leur tour entamé un dialogue avec le projet „Staging Times“ avec leurs propres performances.
After completing his PhD programme at the Centre for African Studies at the University of Basel in Switzerland, Peter Ayoola Oderinde is currently a full-time lecturer at the Department of Religious and Intercultural Studies at Lead City University in Ibadan, Nigeria. He also chaired the host committee for the first international conference of the Faculty of Humanities at Lead City University. more
