After the ten-day workshop in Bamako in December 2021, the six female photographers – Fatoumata Diabate, Oumou Diarra, Dickonet, Mariam Niare, Kani Sissoko and Oumou Traore – continued to work on their individual photo series for over a year. Via Zoom and WhatsApp, the curators Franziska Jenni, Joyce Pennekamp and Delphine Gatinois regularly entered into a creative exchange with them about the emerging series of works.

Finally, on 7 March 2023, the exhibition was successfully opened in Bamako at Lassana Igo Diara’s Galerie Medina in the presence of an interested audience. In the last four weeks, various school classes from high schools and Bamako’s Conservatoire, led by Yamarou Photo Collective, visited the exhibition and entered into dialogue with the women photographers about their works.

Franziska Jenni has been working as the new programme coordinator for the Fondation Oumou Dilly since March 2022. She brings with her many years of experience in the mediation, promotion and implementation of cultural and artistic projects. She studied social anthropology, art history and gender studies at the Universities of Basel and Bern and specialised in the interdisciplinary field of contemporary African art and the material and visual culture of West Africa. Franziska Jenni already gained professional experience during her studies by working on independent art projects, in museums and scientific institutes. After completing her MA degree, she did a two-year curatorial internship at the Museum der Kulturen Basel and then continued to work for five years as senior curator of the Africa department of the same institution. During this time, she was responsible for the organisation and implementation of several exhibitions and selected provenance research projects. In 2015, Franziska Jenni returned to the University of Basel to write a PhD thesis on the contemporary photography scene in Bamako, Mali, as part of the SNF-funded research project „Art/Articulation: art and the formation of social space in African cities“. In addition to her academic work, she has organised more and more independent art projects and exhibitions in recent years, always in close cooperation with artists and gallerists from various African countries.

The Fondation Oumou Dilly warmly welcomes Franziska Jenni and is delighted to be working with her.

12/2021 – Nyeleni – six female photographic perspectives, Part I (workshop)

Nyeleni – six female photographic perspectives, Part I (workshop)

December 2021

Nyeleni is the name of a legendary female figure in Bamana culture, who has the reputation of having worked harder and more successfully in her life than any man, even in traditional male domains such as farming or weaving. Figuratively, Nyeleni is therefore also used in the Bamanankan language to describe women who dare to make a difference in life, make their voices heard and follow their own path by still acting socially and caring for others at the same time. This is equally true for the six artists gathered in this project who have all ventured into a professional field that until not so long ago was a purely male domain: Fatoumata Diabate, Oumou Diarra, Dickonet, Mariam Niare, Kani Sissoko and Oumou Traore, they all are professional photographers who live and work (mostly) in Bamako, Mali, and use this medium to visualize a whole range of issues concerning Malian society from a women’s perspective.
With the support of the Fondation Oumou Dilly, the collective art project was launched by the curators Franziska Jenni and Joyce Pennekamp as well as artist and scenographer Delphine Gatinois in Bamako in December 2021. The aim of the ten-day workshop was to explore together which topics and visual approaches could be taken up in the individual artistic contributions which will be shown in various exhibitions on the African and European continent in the coming two years. The aim of the exhibition is to give the audience insights into the hopes and dreams of this generation of women in Bamako through the different visual stories, but also into what they denounce, what they want to change and of what they want to heal.
